  1. Hotels in Scottsdale, Ariz., a market hit hard by the recession, showed a healthy upswing in May, with occupancy rising to 58%, a 5.8% increase over the same month in 2009, according to Smith Travel Research. And the increase didn't appear to come as a result of slashed room rates as has been seen in other markets. The average daily room rate for May was $127.66, a 1.4% increase over May 2009, and revenue per available room was up 7.3% to $74.07.
