ONE IN EVERY NINE JOBS IN AMERICA DEPENDS ON TOURISM
Travel and tourism is one of the largest private employers in the United States, ranking in the top 10 industries in 48 states and the District of Columbia in terms of employment. In 2009, 7.4 million American workers (including both full-time and seasonal/part-time positions) were directly employed in travel-related jobs. This accounted for 5.6 percent of total non-farm employment in the United States. But, the number of travel-related jobs created directly and indirectly by the spending of domestic and international travelers equaled 10.1 million. Given the total employment picture created by the industry (direct, indirect and induced), 1 out of every 9 jobs in the United States depends on travel and tourism.
